Screening plants for privacy, shelter and boundaries
Young evergreen screening plants in economical packs: clumping Fargesia bamboo for a fast, non-invasive screen; Thuja 'Smaragd' and Leyland cypress for a dense conifer boundary; cherry laurel and Photinia 'Red Robin' for a glossy broadleaf hedge; Elaeagnus 'Compacta' for windy and coastal sites; and Euonymus 'Green Spire' where you need a narrow upright line. Tall grasses and climbers cover fences and pergolas. Everything is supplied in pots, with free tracked delivery across Ireland and 24 more EU countries.
Choosing a screen
- Speed: Leyland cypress is the fastest (up to about a metre a year once established), then cherry laurel and Photinia, then Thuja 'Smaragd'. Fargesia reaches 2.5–4m over several years.
- Spacing: Leyland 1–2 per metre, Thuja 2–3, cherry laurel and Photinia 2–3, Elaeagnus 2–3, Fargesia 1–2. Closer spacing closes the screen sooner.
- Upkeep: fast conifers need trimming twice a year and are best kept below 2m; laurel and Photinia once or twice; Thuja and Fargesia need little. In Ireland the Wildlife Act restricts hedge cutting between 1 March and 31 August, with limited exceptions.
- Young plants: packs are 9–14cm pots, 20–45cm tall, so allow two or three seasons for a screen and water well in the first two summers.
