Which indoor plant should I choose?
Start with your light, not the look. For a dim room or a north-facing window, choose a ZZ plant, a parlour palm or a kentia palm: all three cope with shade and an irregular watering routine. For a bright spot out of harsh midday sun, go for Monstera deliciosa, a fiddle leaf fig or Strelitzia nicolai. Sunny windowsills suit aloe vera and succulents. The ZZ plant is hard to beat: it stores water in thick underground rhizomes, so it forgives missed waterings and copes with low light. Kentia and parlour palms are the easiest choices if you also have pets.
Which indoor plants are safe for cats and dogs?
Palms such as kentia, areca and parlour palm, plus Calathea, the money tree, the ponytail palm and ferns such as Asplenium, are listed as non-toxic by the ASPCA. Monstera, philodendron, pothos, ficus and ZZ plants are not, so keep those out of reach.
How much light does an indoor plant need?
Most tropical houseplants do best in bright, indirect light within a couple of metres of a window. Low-light plants will tolerate shadier corners, but they grow more slowly and need watering less often.
