Hyacinths are autumn-planted bulbs with dense, strongly scented flower spikes in spring, and they do especially well in pots and raised beds where Irish gardeners can give them free-draining soil. Free tracked delivery across Ireland and 24 more EU countries.
Plant hyacinths from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, pointed end up, in sun or part shade. They flower in March and April.
| Bulb | When to plant | Depth | Spacing | Light | Flowers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyacinthus 'Blue Water' mix | September–November | 10–15 cm | 10–15 cm | Sun or part shade | March–April |
| Hyacinthus pastel mix | September–November | 10–15 cm | 10–15 cm | Sun or part shade | March–April |
| Hyacinthus mixed colours | September–November | 10–15 cm | 10–15 cm | Sun or part shade | March–April |
Hyacinths are very good in pots near a door or window, where you can enjoy the scent. Use free-draining compost and make sure the container has drainage holes, because wet, waterlogged conditions rot bulbs more than cold does. For a longer display, try lasagne layering, with hyacinths in the middle and small early bulbs on top.
Wear gloves when handling the bulbs, as they can irritate the skin. Hyacinth bulbs are also toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, so store and plant them out of reach. After flowering, leave the foliage for about six weeks so the bulbs can build up for next year.
From September to November. Planting in this window gives the roots time to establish before the flower spikes appear in March and April.
Aim for the same 10–15 cm depth as in the ground, spacing bulbs 10–15 cm apart, pointed end up.
The bulbs can irritate the skin, so wear gloves when planting and wash your hands afterwards.
