Bluebells are spring bulbs for dappled shade, and the native bluebell is one of the loveliest sights under Irish trees, while Spanish bluebells suit gardens away from native woodland. Free tracked delivery across Ireland and 24 more EU countries.
Plant bluebells in September and October, about 10 cm deep and 10 cm apart, pointed end up, in dappled shade under trees or shrubs. Our bulbs come from cultivated stock; never dig bulbs from the wild.
| Bulb | When to plant | Depth | Spacing | Light | Flowers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyacinthoides non-scripta (native bluebell) | September–October | About 10 cm | 10 cm | Dappled shade | Spring |
| Hyacinthoides hispanica (Spanish bluebell) | September–October | About 10 cm | 10 cm | Dappled shade or part shade | Spring |
If your garden is near a native bluebell wood, plant native bluebells only. Spanish bluebells hybridise with native ones, so keep them well away from native bluebell woods; they are better suited to town gardens and borders.
Bluebells naturalise well. Scatter the bulbs in informal drifts under trees and plant them where they fall, in soil that does not become waterlogged, since wet ground rots bulbs more than cold does. Delay mowing or tidying for about six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can build up for next year.
Buying named stock is the simplest way to be sure. Our native bluebells are Hyacinthoides non-scripta and our Spanish bluebells are Hyacinthoides hispanica, clearly labelled on each product.
You should never dig bulbs from the wild. Buy bulbs grown from cultivated stock, as ours are.
About 10 cm deep and 10 cm apart, pointed end up, ideally in dappled shade under deciduous trees.
