Gaultheria procumbens 'Big Berry' is a low, spreading evergreen with glossy leaves that bronze in the cold and large red berries that hold from autumn well into spring. It is one of the most useful plants for a winter pot, and the red berries give a festive look without any cut greenery.
- Glossy evergreen leaves, tinged bronze in cold weather
- Large red berries from autumn, often lasting into spring
- Small white bell flowers in late spring
- Six plants in 12cm pots, about 15-20cm tall
- Partial shade; needs moist, acidic, humus-rich soil
- Forms low, slowly spreading cover
In pots, use ericaceous (lime-free) compost and keep it moist, as the roots dislike drying out even in winter. Outdoors it suits leafy, acidic soil in part shade. The berries are ornamental only and not for eating, so keep them away from children and pets. It fruits on its own, so you do not need a second plant.
