Picea pungens 'Glauca', the blue spruce, has stiff, silver-blue needles and a symmetrical shape that makes a striking living Christmas tree. Keep them outside as long as you can, with LED lights and light ornaments. If you bring one in, limit the stay to about 10-12 days in the coolest, brightest spot, away from radiators, fires and stoves. Water when the top of the compost starts to dry and never leave the pot standing in water. Warm, dry indoor air weakens spruce and encourages spider mites, which is another reason to keep the indoor stay short. Afterwards, harden it off in an unheated porch or shed for a few days, then return it to a sheltered outdoor spot or plant it out. Pots dry out faster than the ground, so check them regularly.
