Partez du rôle que vous lui attribuez. Pour une haie basse et nette ou une bordure, choisissez le fusain dressé Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' ou le chèvrefeuille arbustif. Pour couvrir un talus ou un sol nu, utilisez l'Euonymus fortunei étalé ou un cotonéaster rampant. Pour parfumer un mur ou une clôture ensoleillés, plantez un jasmin étoilé. Planter des arbustes persistants en Irlande

L'automne (septembre à novembre) et le printemps (mars à mai) sont les meilleures périodes de plantation, quand le sol est humide et assez chaud pour que les racines s'installent. Vous pouvez planter des arbustes en pot à d'autres moments si vous arrosez bien, mais évitez les sols gelés ou détrempés. En argile lourde, ameublissez le sol bien au-delà du trou de plantation et ajoutez de la matière organique pour que l'eau s'écoule loin des racines. Arrosez les nouveaux arbustes pendant leur premier été, même après la pluie, car les persistants perdent de l'humidité par leurs feuilles toute l'année.

Haies, écrans et couvre-sols

Pour une haie basse, plantez les petits arbustes de nos lots de six en ligne droite ou en double rang décalé, puis taillez légèrement deux ou trois fois par saison pour la garder dense. Les arbustes couvre-sols comme Euonymus fortunei 'Dart's Blanket' et Hypericum calycinum se rejoignent vite et aident à étouffer les mauvaises herbes. Pour un écran plus haut, le bambou cespiteux Fargesia 'Black Dragon' n'est pas envahissant et se montre rustique dans les jardins irlandais. La plupart de ces plantes sont toxiques pour les animaux s'ils les mangent : vérifiez chaque fiche produit si votre chien a tendance à mâchonner.
