Euonymus japonicus 'White Spire' carries dark green leaves with crisp white margins on an upright, fast-thickening frame. It is the quicker of the two variegated Japanese spindles, which makes it the one to choose when you want a screen rather than a slow ornamental hedge.

Why it works in cooler northern European gardens

• Fast to fill — noticeably quicker than most evergreen hedging, so you get a dense line sooner.
• Upright habit — it grows narrow, which suits a boundary where you cannot give up much width.

Planting
