Pachysandra terminalis - Dense Evergreen Ground Cover for Shaded Gardens
Pachysandra terminalis, also known as Japanese spurge, is an ideal evergreen ground cover for shaded spots in the garden. Its dense, dark green foliage forms a lush carpet that suppresses weeds and provides year-round color and texture. Low-maintenance and easy to grow, it thrives in rich, moist soil, making it perfect for shaded gardens and borders.
Key Features
- Evergreen Coverage: Retains glossy, dark green foliage throughout all seasons, providing consistent color even in winter
- Shade Tolerant: Thrives in partial to full shade where other plants struggle, ideal under trees and along shaded paths
- Weed Suppression: Forms a dense mat 6-10 inches tall that naturally inhibits weed growth, reducing garden maintenance
- Low Maintenance: Requires minimal care once established, drought-tolerant and deer-resistant
- Rapid Spreading: Spreads via underground rhizomes to quickly fill bare areas and create complete coverage
Planting Information
This bulk pack contains 40 Pachysandra terminalis plants, each 10-25cm in height and supplied in 9cm growing pots. For optimal coverage, space plants 6-12 inches apart. They will establish within the first season and spread to form a continuous carpet within 1-2 years. Best planted in organically rich, well-drained soil with consistent moisture.
Ideal Growing Conditions
Pachysandra terminalis performs best in partial to full shade locations. It adapts to various soil types including clay and acidic soils, and is one of the few ground covers that grows successfully under pine trees. In spring, tiny white fragrant flower spikes appear above the foliage, adding seasonal interest. This ground cover is also effective for erosion control on slopes and hillsides.
