Vinca major 'Variegata' - Variegated Greater Periwinkle Ground Cover
Vinca major 'Variegata', also known as Variegated Big Leaf Periwinkle or Greater Periwinkle, is a hardy evergreen ground cover featuring glossy green leaves with distinctive creamy-white margins. This vigorous trailing plant creates dense coverage while suppressing weed growth naturally.
Flowers and Foliage
Purple-blue flowers emerge in spring and continue sporadically through summer and fall, adding seasonal color above the variegated foliage. The larger leaves (compared to Vinca minor) provide bold visual impact with their striking green and cream coloration that brightens shady areas year-round.
Growing Conditions
Thrives in partial shade to full shade, making it ideal for difficult spots under trees and shrubs. Once established, this drought-tolerant plant adapts to various soil types and requires minimal maintenance. Hardy in zones 7-10, with semi-evergreen behavior in northern zones.
Landscape Uses
Perfect for borders, slopes, erosion control, and underplanting around trees and shrubs. The trailing stems root at nodes as they spread, creating effective ground coverage. Also suitable for containers, hanging baskets, and spilling over retaining walls.
