Aloe Vera is one of Ireland's most recognisable houseplants — a neat rosette of thick, pointed leaves with a long folk reputation behind it. We grow and sell it purely as an ornamental succulent: it is not supplied for use on the skin or for eating. As a houseplant, Aloe Vera is one of the easiest succulents to grow — it thrives on a sunny windowsill, tolerates weeks without water, and steadily develops into an impressive architectural shape. How Often Do Succulents Need Watering?

Most succulents need watering every 2–4 weeks in summer and every 4–6 weeks in winter — far less than conventional houseplants. The golden rule is 'soak and dry': water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering (soggy soil, soft mushy leaves) kills far more succulents than underwatering. Always use a pot with drainage holes.

Hardy Succulents for Outdoor Gardens

Several succulent species are fully frost-hardy and suitable for permanent outdoor planting in European gardens. Sempervivum (Houseleeks) survive temperatures down to -20°C and are commonly used in green roofs. Sedum (Stonecrop) varieties like Sedum spathulifolium and Sedum telephium are equally hardy, producing yellow or pink flowers in summer and forming ground-covering mats over time.
