Vinca minor 'La Grave' - Evergreen Ground Cover with Purple Flowers
Vinca minor 'La Grave' is an evergreen ground cover with glossy, deep green leaves and vibrant purple flowers that bloom in spring and summer. This low-growing, fast-spreading plant is ideal for shady or partially shaded areas in the garden.
Key Features
- Evergreen Foliage: Maintains lush green leaves year-round for continuous garden interest
- Vibrant Purple Blooms: Star-shaped flowers appear in spring and continue through summer
- Fast-Spreading Growth: Forms a dense mat that effectively suppresses weeds and prevents soil erosion
- Drought-Tolerant: Once established, requires minimal watering and maintenance
- Shade-Loving: Thrives in partial to full shade, perfect for under trees and woodland gardens
Planting and Care
Space plants 8-12 inches apart for optimal coverage. 'La Grave' adapts to most soil types but prefers well-drained, moist conditions. This variety is hardy in zones 4-9 and reaches 4-6 inches in height while spreading 1-2 feet. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots, then reduce watering as the plant becomes drought-resistant.
Ideal Uses
Perfect for planting under trees, as border edging, in rock gardens, or on slopes where erosion control is needed. The dense growth habit makes it excellent for filling difficult areas where grass struggles to grow. Also works well in containers and hanging baskets where its trailing stems can cascade over edges.
